  • Influencer Spotlight – Mary Silva

Mary Silva has been a part of the Search Influence team for nine months, and in that time she’s gotten a reputation for hard work and dedication. She’s become the go-to person for managing clients’ online presences when it comes to Google, Yahoo and Bing. She is also the person people run to when they need a call made to Google. Additionally, as an Internet Marketing Associate, Mary does basic editorial work for the content team and helps to create monthly reports for clients.

Mary Arthemise Silva, not be confused with her Aunt Arthemise Mary, carries on the tradition of bearing this family name, which gets flipped with each generation. So Mary has an aunt named Arthemise Mary and a grandmother named Mary Arthemise. As a native New Orleanian, Mary tells me all locals always want to know where you went to high school. So for all you locals out there, Mary graduated from Cabrini High School.

Outside of Search Influence, Mary works as a freelance photographer and musician. While she usually focuses on synth, guitar, and vocals, she can actually play seven different instruments. Recently, Mary had the crazy opportunity, through a co-worker, to photograph the band Fun. Mary specializes in creative portraiture photography and usually shoots senior portraits, live bands, and headshots. Every year, she photographs NOLA Fashion Week for designer Noël Martin. Fun fact: Mary also shot photos for the Search Influence website! In addition to working at Search Influence and freelancing in her spare time, Mary is also a marketing major at Tulane University and is looking forward to receiving her BSM in May 2014.

    FUN
One of Mary’s photos from the recent Fun. concert in New Orleans.

When I asked Mary what the best part of working at Search Influence she said, “My favorite thing about working at SI is the people. I love my coworkers and have literally never had a bad experience with anyone in the office in the nine months that I’ve been here. We also have an awesome team building committee that puts together fun quarterly events for the company. It’s a really great way to interact with fellow Influencers since we spend a lot of our time working behind a computer.”

  • Search Influence: Home of Master Pumpkin Carvers

PumpkinsAt Search Influence, we are a “Work hard, play hard” bunch! With it being the spooky Halloween season, a few of our account managers decided to get together to carve pumpkins! “Team Megan,” named for our Senior Account Manager, Megan Lindsey, left Search Influence promptly at 5:30pm on Thursday, October, 24th and drove straight to the nearest pumpkin patch.

After picking out the perfect pumpkins, we all headed back to Sarah’s house. Once we were there, Megan whipped up some delicious taco soup (recipe listed below). While the soup was simmering on the stove, we got to work on the carving.

    photo (1)

Carving our pumpkins. From left to right, Erika Karas, Julie Simmons, Jordan Polhemus, Samantha Wright and Sarah Gallagher

    photo 1

Between stencils, steak knives, pumpkin carving kits and some patience we brought our pumpkins to life. On the top left you’ll see Jordan Polhemus’ pumpkin. In an attempt to carve a southern take on “BOO!”, she had carved “Boo Y’all!!” into her pumpkin. This turned out to look more like “Hoo Y’all!!” but it was fitting as we had two owls! Megan Lindsey’s pumpkin, in the middle left, might just take flight! Sarah Gallagher is our team “Wanna-Be-Hipster” and free handed a crescent moon and stars onto her pumpkin! #nostencil

    photo 2

Top right we have our other owl, carved by Samantha Wright. Below we have Julie Simmon’s ghost. By the way, this pumpkin was carved exclusively with a steak knife. Julie wasn’t wasting any time on tiny pumpkin carving tools! Finally, at the bottom right, you have my (Erika Karas’) headless man! #stencilrequired

After all of the pumpkins were carved, candles lit and pictures taken, we went back inside and roasted our pumpkin seeds. Between six pumpkins we made three types: cinnamon sugar, garlic, and salt and pepper!

    Happy Halloween from Team Megan!

    Megan’s Taco Soup Recipe:
    Ingredients
    2 pounds ground beef
    2 cups diced onions
    2 cans pinto beans
    1 can pink kidney beans
1 can whole kernel corn, drained
    1 can Mexican-style stewed tomatoes
    1 can diced tomatoes
    1 can tomatoes with chiles
    2 cans diced green chiles
    1 package taco seasoning mix
1 package ranch salad dressing mix
    Corn chips, for serving
    Sour cream, for garnish
    Grated cheese, for garnish
    Chopped green onions, for garnish

    Directions
Brown the ground beef and onions in a large skillet; drain the excess fat, then transfer the browned beef and onions to a large slow cooker or a stockpot. Add the beans, corn, tomatoes, green chiles, taco seasoning, and ranch dressing mix, and cook in a slow cooker on low for 6 to 8 hours or simmer over low heat for about 1 hour in a pot on the stove. To serve, place a few corn chips in each bowl and ladle soup over them. Top with sour cream, cheese and green onions.

  • X-TREME Team Building

The Search Influence team took off early on Friday and headed to Adventure Quest for some good old-fashioned fun. Bumper cars, laser tag, blowing up terminators in the arcade—it was definitely our most extreme team building session yet. Below are some photos and a few quotes from Influencers about their favorite part of the day.

  • The Search Influence Life: A Six-Month Update

I’m coming up on the six-month mark here at Search Influence, and in these last six months, I’ve come to really enjoy this company.  I’ve always been rather picky about where I work, as I like an atmosphere that encourages learning and team work.  I believe in positive reinforcement for a job well done and recognize the need for constructive criticism to ensure your work is up to the high standards clients deserve.  I prefer to dress casual, as I believe working comfortably and being yourself produces higher quality work consistently.  I’m a single father, and on occasion I have to leave work in order to make appointments with my son’s school or doctor. Because of that, I need an employer that can understand this and allow me some flexibility to ensure both my work and home responsibilities are taken care of.

shane blogDuring my job hunting several months ago, I turned down several employment offers from companies that still believe in stuffy uptight office environments with little to no personality.  I accepted the offer to work here at Search Influence, because it seemed to have all of the qualities I look for.  I’m so happy to report Search Influence has delivered on all of my personal requirements in a job — and even gone above and beyond my expectations!

My fellow employees are amazing, and they aren’t afraid to show you how much they appreciate it when you provide quality work.  This place is FULL of highly competent experts in the field — all more than willing to help another co-worker at a moment’s notice.  The management here comes through on its promises, encourages personal growth and seems to understand that happy employees are productive employees!  The internal team building committee provides paid time for co-workers to enjoy each other’s company outside of the office as well. I’m looking forward to kicking butt in the upcoming laser tag game!

So thanks to Search Influence and to my fellow co-workers for making this the perfect job for me!

  • Influencer Spotlight- Rafiq Mandal: Many Sigils, One Purpose

Today I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with fellow production department Influencer Rafiq Mandal and learn a little more about him. One of the most interesting things I learned about Rafiq is that he has a pet bearded dragon named Falcor (for all you The NeverEnding Story fans out there, yes, that’s where it’s from!). Rafiq was born in New York but grew up in Mexico City. He ended up in New Orleans when he decided to go to Loyola University. There, he studied creative writing as an English major and graduated in 2010.

    Rafiq of the Many

About seven months ago, Rafiq joined the production department at Search Influence as an Internet Marketing Associate. On an average day, Rafiq spends much of his time troubleshooting technical issues with our keyword ranking software, making the keyword software run smoothly. Rafiq also writes, edits, and optimizes content for Search Influence. Rafiq says his favorite part about SI is the relaxed atmosphere and his colleagues: “We’re very open and know how to have a good time, even when things are tough and crazy. My coworkers are what makes Search Influence a great place to work.”

Outside of work, Rafiq, like many other Search Influencers you may have heard about through this blog, plays Dungeons and Dragons. He also runs his own radio show through crescentcityradio.com. His show, “The Music of a Blue Haired Modern-Day Samurai,” airs on Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. This broadcast features primarily Japanese-rock, Japanese-pop, Korean-rock, Korean-pop, and other Asian-influenced genres. Rafiq also sings in the St. Louis Cathedral choir on Sundays along with his brother who is an opera singer.

I asked Rafiq what neighborhood of New Orleans he most identifies with and why. He said that he’s spent most of his time around Uptown, being someone who was introduced to New Orleans through college. Rafiq enjoys the fact that everything you need to access Uptown is within walking distance, very unlike his life in Mexico City.

Rafiq, like myself, is a huge fan of Star Wars, so I figured I’d close this interview with a pretty tough Star Wars trivia question.

    Question:
A member of what diminutive race finds Luke’s cut-off hand and light saber?

    Rafiq’s answer:
On first thought, I didn’t think anyone would have it, but I guess it would have to be somewhere on Bespin, the cloud city. So I assume Ugnaughts since they are the only creatures there.

    REAL ANSWER?! Ugnaught! Go Rafiq!!

  • Search Influence’s 7th Anniversary: A Reflection and Q&A With Founders Will & Angie Scott

Will & Angie Scott founded Search Influence in January 2006, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate our seventh anniversary. This past year has been especially eventful for us, and to celebrate another successful year in the books, we had a joint holiday and anniversary party at New Orleans’ own Rock-n-Bowl. We bowled, we ate, we drank, we danced — we even hula hooped! In 2012, we began supporting and working with a local non-profit, Youth Rebuilding New Orleans. We are so honored to have the opportunity of working with YRNO and to assist in their efforts both online and off. Our team is planning a service day in 2013 to work with YRNO on rebuilding a home in the city.

Many other Search Influence employees have also taken an interest in blogging, both here on our blog and elsewhere on the web. We are so proud that they are able to take the knowledge learned here, apply it to real life situations, add their personal twist and share with the industry.

This year we were also lucky enough to continue our exponential growth. Lots of new faces joined our team in 2012, and we were able to find the perfect VP of Sales and Marketing in Kelly Benish.

Other new faces include: Gabrielle Benedetto, Julie Simmons, Laura Manning, Maggie Johnson, Erika Karas, Rebekah Durel, Emily Kerner, Jennifer Stout, Patrick Sugrue, Will Monson, Allison Warmbir, David Fransen, Chelsea Bowling, Mattie Kenny, Tracy Stoller, Kasey Clark, Jason Grodsky, Melanie Bonhomme, Evan Rinehart, Caleb Albritton, Andre Eble, Justin Scott, Lauren Christy and Scott Holstein. We’ve continued that momentum into 2013 with our first new hire of the year, Joe Romito.

The last couple of years have also brought major milestones for our company. Search Influence had humble beginnings, starting out of Will and Angie’s dining room and eventually moving into a small office on Jackson Avenue. But that wasn’t enough to hold our growing team. We expanded down the hall into a couple of other office spaces on Jackson Avenue and were lucky enough to finally move to our current location on Oak Street. This new location gave us the ability to work together as a team in a unified workspace, and provided enough room for us to continue to expand.

In 2011, Search Influence was included on the Inc. 500 list for fastest growing companies in America, and was featured again in 2012. Although our growth is apparent to us (at least in number of employees), we were very excited to be recognized among the many other hard working and growing companies across the country.

Of course, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the loyalty and trust of all of our amazing clients! We want to sincerely thank you for allowing us to be a part of your team and to help you grow your businesses online. We cherish each one of you: as an account manager, I can personally say that interacting with you on a daily basis keeps us on our toes, which we appreciate! You challenge us to be experts in our field and to continue to grow our ever-expanding knowledge base.

With the anniversary drawing near, I also had the opportunity to interview Will Scott, CEO and Angie Scott, COO. Although they are very busy, they relished the opportunity to take some time and reflect on the growth and momentum this journey has produced so far, as well as what’s in store for the future.

Thoughts on our 7th anniversary? How do you plan on celebrating?

We had a really nice holiday party with the team on Friday the 4th. Aside from that, I think we’re going to celebrate by keeping on, keeping on. Even though we’re 7 years old, it feels like we just got started most days!

What are you most proud of as a company? Any favorite feathers in our cap you’d like to share?

Wow. That’s a hard one. I’m proud of so many things.

Growth: zero to almost 50 (over 100 including contract) employees in 7 years. The great work we do: there are so many ways to measure — ranking, leads, fans and followers — that our clients have really seen the benefit to their business of our work. One of my favorites is the Audubon Institute — 50,000 Facebook likes added (over 75,000 total!) under our watch. Also: seeing team members grow. It blows me away when I hear some of things our team says. I’m like “Wow! I could have said that!”

Where do you see the company at the 10 year mark? What is your top priority in the next few years leading up to the 10th anniversary?

2013 is a product development year for Search Influence. We’re going to keep going on our current path, but we’re also looking at ways we can broaden our reach. So year 8 will be about building tools which will help us grow at a more rapid pace in years 9 and 10.

What has been the most rewarding part of starting Search Influence?

Knowing that our work helps thousands of small businesses succeed online. I used the Audubon example before, but there are many others, not as well known, who’ve seen incredible growth in revenue, reach and market share through search and social media.

Additionally, seeing our team excel. The majority of our Account Management team are Google and Bing Ads Certified, and we have 3 Google Analytics Certified team members as well. We are among the most credentialed online marketing firms anywhere and it shows in our work.

Beyond the credentials, our team is smart, learns fast and executes phenomenally. We are working in an area they don’t teach. On the job training, tinkering and testing is how we all learn and get better.

What has been the most surprising thing?

In May of 2010, we made a decision after nearly 4 years to end a relationship with a firm in India who staffed our production team. I was initially surprised at how easily we replicated those skills here. Then I was blown away by how much more efficient we were under one roof in our new Oak Street office.

To what factors can you attribute SI’s rapid growth?

Honestly, I wish it were more rapid most days. But, I can see how, compared to many New Orleans companies, it’s pretty darn quick.

The #1 factor I attribute our growth to is that we built it to scale from day 1. It is one of our mantras to ask the question “How can we do this at scale”?

What are your opinions on the booming NOLA startup scene?

It’s great. Anything which attracts talent to New Orleans is a positive. The New Orleans startup scene is a little too focused on ideas and not enough on viable products and services, today, but I’m sure that with time it will mature.

Our vision statement is “Search Influence helps customers successfully market online.” Do you think we’ve stayed true to this goal? Any key takeaways for the future?

Search Influence has stayed true to its vision statement of “helping customers successfully market online” since the beginning, and will continue to do so into the future. We sell to direct customers that are competing phenomenally online, and to White Label clients whose customers are also doing very well.

As I’ve said, it’s all about scale. The more we can focus on skills and growing our team, the more businesses we can serve.

With countless happy clients, a top-notch team of dedicated employees, and big ambitions for what’s to come, Search Influence’s future looks bright. Our thanks to our CEO and COO Will & Angie Scott for joining us for this Q&A, and congratulations on seven exceptional years!

  • Influencer Profile: Jeff Ramos

Search Influence Internet Marketing Associate Jeff RamosOriginally from the New Orleans area, Internet Marketing Associate Jeff Ramos lived in Atlanta for 7 years before taking a job at a high school in San Francisco coaching the Varsity Boys Soccer Team. He stayed in San Francisco for about a year before moving to Lake Tahoe and working for Heavenly Ski Resort. After dealing with 600 feet of snow, he decided that it wasn’t the place for him and moved back to his hometown — not to mention warmer weather. He’s loving every second of being in the city again and eating the great food New Orleans has to offer. His favorite foods here are shrimp po’boys (which he usually has about 4 a week) and crawfish.

Tell us about yourself! Where’d you go to school? Are you a NOLA resident originally?

I recently moved back after a little over a year in California. I spent this past winter in Lake Tahoe skiing and loved every second of it but I missed my family and had to be closer to home. I grew up in New Orleans and am glad to call it home again. I moved to Atlanta when I was a teenager and always knew I would be back.

You’re one of our newer employees — how long ago did you start? How’s SI been so far?

I’ve been here 2 months now and am enjoying the different challenges I am faced with each day. SI has been great so far, as I have learned different things everyday I have been here. The employees here have really made it an easy transition with all the help I have received.

What do you find yourself doing around the office?

A little bit of everything, whether it’s publishing content, performing QA or any other task that comes my way.

I hear you do some coaching on the side — tell us about it!

I have been coaching youth soccer for the past 8 years. I enjoy teaching and being involved with youth sports. Currently I am coaching 2 teams based with the Chicago Fire Organization of Louisiana.

Anything you’d like to be spending more time on? In the ideal world, what would you be doing all day?

I would like to spend more time on blogging and getting involved more in social media. In my ideal world I would love to be on top of a mountain skiing or sitting front row at Old Trafford rooting for Manchester United!

Do you come from a marketing or Internet background? How do you use your skill set at SI?

I had some experience before coming to Searchinfluence performing Quality Assurance on different websites and other random tasks to ensure the quality of our sites. Things are a little different at SI, but I am enjoying learning the ins and outs of SEO.
