  • Five for Friday – Google Does the World Cup, Pinterest as the Next Big Search Engine, and Facebook Playing Catch Up!

FiveForFridayJuneGoogle revamps its algorithm, and its Doodles. Businesses are finding their audience on Pinterest more than ever before. Meanwhile, Facebook finally finds a way to mimic Snapchat, but with a catch.

    1. World Cup Google Doodles – Google

If you haven’t noticed Google’s Doodles this week, here is a recap of the clever, funny, and sometimes interactive animations created by to promote the FIFA World Cup and the many countries trying for the title. Each Doodle changes several times during the day depending on the countries currently matched up. If you click on the Doodle you will also be taken to a live scoreboard of the current game. GO USA!

    2. PayDay Loan 3.0 Algorithm Update – Search Engine Land

In other Google news, Matt Cutts has announced the rollout of another update to the ever-changing search engine algorithm that determines website rankings on the results page. This update is primarily focused on “very spammy queries,” which is an extension of the PayDay 2.0 update released couple of weeks ago. The types of queries and links that will be affected are pornography, payday loans, casinos, Viagra, and other similar topics most usually associated with “spammy” links and queries. It’s another great move by Google, an effort to clean up their search results and provide users with only the most relevant, and non-spam websites to choose from.

    3. Four Pinterest Statistic you Need to Know – Search Engine Watch

As for any business or marketer, you should always know both where your customers or potential customers are, and how they are interacting with you online. Pinterest, one of the fastest growing and most influential sharing sites currently on the web, could give your business just the right insight about their target audiences. You should understand the following statistics before starting a Pinterest campaign:

    1.  Women are the primary Pinterest users, and they out-pin men every day by far.
    2.  What are these women pinning?
-DIY projects, home decor, weddings, recipes, beauty, fashion, travel, fitness, photography, and many other topics.
    3. Who is your competition on Pinterest?
-Etsy, Urban Outfitters, West Elm, Brides.com., and Poketo among hundreds of other businesses.
    4. When are these women pinning?
      -Between 4p.m. and 10p.m.

    4. Bing Attempts to Predict the World Cup – Search Engine Land

Using their prediction technology (a combination of team stats, weather forecasts, player line up, and homefield advantage among other things) Bing is attempting to predict the FFIA World Cup! Although it is not a perfect system by any means, Bing is getting a lot of attention for their prediction technology, which certainly is the end goal. If you search for something along the lines of “world cup predictions group b” you can see for yourself how Bing thinks your favorite team will fare.

    5. Facebook Launches Slingshot App – ABC News

Facebook has launched the anticipated Slingshot app, which is very similar to the already widely popular SnapChat application. The biggest difference between the two image sharing apps is that there is a “pay to play” incentive to Slingshot. In order to the see the image that someone shared with you, you must first share an image back. The reason behind this feature is so that everyone becomes an active creator of content and images instead of just viewing from the sidelines. It is a clever attempt to force engagement of its users and incentivize overall creativity. As a direct challenger of SnapChat, it will be interesting to see how Slingshot fares in this highly competitive genre of apps.

  • May The Nola Festivals Be With You

As all New Orleanians know, this great city is known for it’s colorful and sometimes wild festivals. If you have spent any time at all here you will know that there is a festival almost every weekend of the year and for almost any occasion you can think of! These festivals can range anywhere from highbrow to downright weird.

However, May holds a special place in our hearts. It is the perfect combination of festival fun without the feeling of melting into a sweaty puddle. Check out what we have going on in the city this month and join the festivities before it gets too hot!

New Orleans Wine and Food Experience

NOWFE-photoThousands of foodies flock to this event to eat their way through one of the best festivals of the year. You can be sure to experience every type food imaginable paired with more wine than you could possibly drink (don’t even attempt to try it all)! Taking place in the French Quarter and with restaurants all over the city participating, this festival is perfect for visitors who are looking for the best that this city has to offer while wandering the historic streets.

    Greek Fest

GreekFestLocated at one of the oldest Greek Orthodox churches in the United States, this massive mediterranean festival celebrates food, family, music, and fun. Taste traditional cuisine, enjoy Hellenic dancers, and rock your toga (or your bedsheets). Grab a souvlaki and learn the Zorba with 20,000 of your closest friends!

    New Orleans Oyster Fest

s.oysterfest.4The last weekend of the May is, in my opinion, the best weekend of the year! The oyster eating contest, the shucking competition, and the largest oyster contest are just a few events that take place during this weekend event. Paired with local music and libations, the oysters are in peak seasons and couldn’t be tastier! There is no wrong way to enjoy your bucket of oysters – raw, grilled, or on a cracker. Bring your friends, your appetite, and shuck on!

  • Instagram is “Ad” it Again!

Screen Shot 2014-03-06 at 11.46.49 AM

Does it seem like, eventually, everything turns into a platform for advertising? For social media, that seems to be the trend when comparing networks over the years. Everything from Facebook, Google, Twitter, Pinterest, and Pandora have all followed the same trend. Using a great business plan (and a lot of foresight), they open their online “doors,” create a massive following, and after a few years succumb to the massive potential profit that is advertising.

    Instagram Ads

Even though it took some time, it is clear that the mega success of our beloved Instagram has followed suit. After Facebook bought the ultra popular image sharing platform for a cool $1 billion, they didn’t waste time reaping a return on their investment. In late 2013, Instagram announced that they would start releasing “sponsored” posts that would look and feel like the other images users were already sharing. The Beta version of these sponsored posts were designed to “underwhelm” users so that they might not even know they were looking at an advertisement.

    Who Sponsors Posts?

Screen Shot 2014-03-06 at 11.47.44 AM
These sponsored posts were only given to a select number of brands like Ben & Jerry’s, Macy’s, Michael Kors, Lexus, and Levis, in order to test out consumer reactions. However, recent studies show that these advertisements were highly successful due to the limited number of competitors on the site, the quality of the advertisement, and the fact that it is an image instead of text. Many advertisers understand that images are far more powerful than words, which is why Instagram, along with its huge user base, is an ideal platform for marketing.

    Personalized Ads

But how will Instagram know what brands you like or images you’re drawn to? The beauty and genius of the merger is that Facebook already knows everything about you! Between the information Facebook has already collected about you (likes, interests, hobbies, etc.) and the images that you like and follow on Instagram, advertisers are able to put more customized and targeted ads in front of you. The hope is that these ads will be so successful that companies will eventually pay more to advertise. So watch out, you might actually start seeing ads that you enjoy!

  • Christmas Exploded in Here!

It’s the time of year again. Thats right, it’s time for competition, secrecy, a bucket of elbow grease, and years of training. Am I talking about the 2014 Winter Olympics? No, I can only be referring to the ruthless Christmas desk decorating contest!

image (14)This year Search Influence decided to challenge everyone in the office to gussy up their workspace all in the name of friendly competition and Christmas spirit. Candidates came from far and wide to participate in the annual games and bring the gold and the glory home to their department. The judges were chosen, the stage set, and the stakes were high.

As soon as the gun went off teammates Alison Zeringue and Gabrielle Benedetto bolted to the lead with a warm and classy gold touches, twinkling lights and garland. With their eyes on the prize, Maggie Bomze and Amanda Ball got creative with a Mean Girl’s themed desk complete with pink ribbons, pink lights, and candy cane grams!

Screen Shot 2014-01-02 at 3.38.36 PMSeeing the competition start to heat up, Kimberly Dominguez and Chris Dopper took their workspace to another level by wrapping their entire desk in red wrapping paper, hanging a garland christmas tree from the ceiling, and topping off their work with red ribbons. Armed with tape and Christmas glory, teammates Erika Karas and Jordan Polhemus wrapped their desks in bright green wrapping paper, hung tinsel and bows from every stationary object, and adorned the room’s only fireplace with stockings, garland, lights, and santa’s shoes coming down from the chimney.

desk 1In the final moments of the competition Maggie Emerson and Rebekah Durel pulled out all of the stops, hand making the largest wreath many of us had ever seen, hanging stockings, adorning their desk in white lights and it was all pulled together with a pink Christmas tree!

Right when we thought the competition was over, Sarah Gallagher and Samantha Wright charged ahead with the holiday gusto of old Saint Nick himself! Cindy Lou Who and the Grinch stole Christmas and the gold in the last second, just in time for the closing ceremonies! They came in full costume, had a poster of “Mount Crumpit,” and even stole odds and ends from everyone’s desks in true Grinch fashion.

From the ruthlessness we’ve witnessed at Search Influence I believe it is safe to say that no holiday contest is too “un-cool” for us Influencers. I’m looking at you, Groundhog Day!
